The Golestan province, located in the northeast of Iran is well-established as a high-risk area for upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, especially esophageal cancer. In the 1970s..., an exceptionally high incidence of esophageal cancer was reported in the Eastern part of the Golestan province, a rate higher than any rates worldwide at the time. The Golestan province was also known as a high-risk population for hepatitis B. The Golestan Research Center of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (GRCGH), affiliated with the Golestan University of Medical Sciences (GOUMS), was established in 2004 to produce high-quality evidences on different aspects of digestive disorders in this high-risk population. The main aim of the GRCGH is to expand the knowledge on burden, risk factors, screening/early detection, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of digestive disorders, with focus on GI cancers. The GRCGH welcomes collaborative research projects at regional, national and international levels. For further information, please contact us by email (grcghgoums.ac.ir).
