Title of news/paper:
Esophageal and gastric cancer incidence trends in Golestan, Iran:
An age-period-cohort analysis 2004 to 2018
In a new article, scientists from GRCGH and colleagues from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the International Agency for Research on cancer (IARC) investigate temporal patterns in esophageal cancer (EC) and gastric cancer (GC) incidence in Golestan over the period 2004 to 2018. The results suggested large declining trends in EC incidence rates. The largest changes occurred among men and in areas historically linked to very high EC risk, indicating generational changes in risk exposures. Meanwhile, no significant shifts in GC incidence were detected. Despite favorable declining trends, Golestan population remains at high risk of both EC and GC. They concluded that further studies are warranted to measure the impact of the major risk factors on incidence with a view to designing effective preventative programs.
