Abstract

Abstract Background and Objective: Superficial mycoses are increasing in special conditions. This retrospective study was conducted to determine the epidemiological parameters of Pityriasis versicolor and Erythrasma during 1994 – 2011. Material and Methods: In this study, we assessed the results of direct microscopic study and the other data of the patients for Pityriasis versicolor and Erythrasma in 1994 – 2011. Results: Of 2265, 1294 (57%) suffered from pityriasis versicolor, who were mostly males (60%). The highest frequency was related to 20-29 year old and the lowest to 0-9. High school and university students were the most infected groups (33%), September was the most common period and the most common site of involvement was chest and abdomen. The people infected with Erythrasma (971 42%), were mostly 30 -39 year old , males( 58% ) , urban ( 98% ) , reported in July and involved in groin. Conclusion: The frequency of both diseases was high in active age group, males, and the hot months of the year, which are the most common predisposing factors. Abstract

Abstract

Background and Objective: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are the leading nosocomial pathogens in Iran. We aimed at evaluating the resistance patterns of Staphylococcus aureus and enterococci to the antibiotics recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).

Material and Methods: Two-hundred forty Staphylococcus aureus and 203 Enterococcus isolated from urine, wound, blood, trachea, stool and other clinical specimens of inpatients and outpatients were obtain from some hospitals in Tehran. Sensitivity of S. aureus to oxacillin, vancomycin, chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, erythromycin, clindamycin and linezolid were determined by disk diffusion according to CLSI (M100-S22) guidelines. Likewise, sensitivity of enterococci to ampicillin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, tigecycline, linezolid, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and nitrofurantoin was invesditated by the same method.

Results: Of 240 S. aureus isolates, 56%, 46.6% and 40.4%were resistant to oxacillin, erythromycin and clindamycin, respectively. We found one S. aureus isolate with low   susceptibility to vancomycin (VISA; 0.5%). All S. aureus isolates were sensitive to chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin and linezolid. Of 203 Enterococcus spp., 47.3%, 24.6%, 9.4%, 85.2%, 11.3% and 4.4% were resistant to ampicillin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and nitrofurantoin, respectively. All these isolates were sensitivity  to tigecycline and linezolid.

Conclusion: Resistance of S. aureus isolates to oxacillin, erythromycin and clindamycin was significant. Enterococci isolates were remarkably resistant to ampicillin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and nitrofurantoin. Given our results, we suggest vancomycin, chloramphenicol, linezolid and nitrofurantoin for S. aureus infections and tigecycline and linezolid as drugs of choice for enterocoocal infections treatment.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Endurance exercise causes fatigue due to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of taurine supplementation on lipids peroxidation and antioxidant activity during endurance activities. 
Methods: Twenty-four male volunteers aged 27 ± 1.8 years and weighting 74.9 ± 5.9 kg were randomly divided into three groups: taurine supplementation (n=8), placebo (n=8), and control (n=8). The subjects completed a 28-day endurance training protocol. Biochemical parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities, as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations (8 hours before the first session and 8 hours after the last session) and maximum rate of oxygen consumption, were measured to evaluate the antioxidant, lipid peroxidation, and VO2 max status respectively. Finally, data were analyzed by SPSS software at a significance level of <0.05.
Results: Taurine supplementation significantly increased SOD (p=0.001) and GPX (p=0.001) but significantly decreased MDA (p=0.001). However, it had no significant effect on the VO2 max. 
Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that taurine has antioxidant effects against endurance exercise-induced oxidant stress and lipid peroxidation.
