Instruction to authors
Journal of Gorgan University of Medical Scineces (J Gorgan Univ Med Sci) is a peer- reviewed and free open access journal. This journal publishes Original article, Reviews, Short Communication or Brief Report, Case Report, Photoclinic, Editorial and Letter to the Editor.
J Gorgan Univ Med Sci follows ICMJE's (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Medical Journals as well as World Association of Medical Editors (WAME). Manuscripts should only be submitted through Online Submission System.
The manuscript should be submitted by online submission. Firstly corresponding author should be register in gorganmedj.goums.ac.ir. Then the corresponding author should be sent the file of manuscript in Microsoft Word format. Manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter to the editor-in-chief, including title and author(s) name and undertaking that it has not been published or submitted elsewhere. In case the manuscript was earlier submitted to some other journal and was rejected, the authors must provide full information for proper analysis. Manuscript should be typed in single space in the A4 size paper with 2cm margins on sides.
Main Considerations and Short Guideline
Please check the following notes before submitting your manuscript:
1. The abstract must be structured (i.e., Background and objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusion).
2. Keywords are included according to MeSh and separated by semicolons.
3. Ethical approval (For human or animal subjects), financial resources and Conflicts of interests should be stated.
4. The authorship and copyright transfer form should be signed and uploaded by all authors.
5. References should meet the format of Standard Vancouver style and cited using citation managing software such as Endnote.
6. All figures and tables should be included in the text after the reference list and cited properly in main document.
7. A cover letter must be included when submitting a manuscript.
8. Manuscripts should be submitted through Online Submission System.
9. Changes to authorship: This policy concerns the addition, deletion, or rearrangement of author names in the authorship of under review and before acceptance of a manuscript. Requests to add or remove an author, or to rearrange the author names, must be sent to the Editor from the corresponding author of the accepted manuscript and must include: (a) the reason the name should be added or removed, or the author names rearranged and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, cellphone, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement.
Structure and Preparation of Manuscripts
Types of Articles: Manuscripts should be prepared and submitted in one of the following formats:
Original Articles: A full-length original research article (not exceeding 4000 words, including tables, figures, and excluding references) presents novel findings relevant to the Aims and Scope of the Journal. The references number not exceeding 30.
Review Articles: Review articles are invited by the editorial office of J Gorgan Uiv Med Sci or submitted by the authors who are interested in publishing their review articles. A narrative Review (up to 6000 words, including tables, figures, and references) provides a summary and discussion of the relevant literature. This form of article should be contained non-structural abstract. The references number not exceeding 70. Authors should refer to at least three papers/works of themselves in the subject which they write a review on.
Systematic Reviews and/or Meta-analyses: These types of publications should report the clear narrow research question and a reproducible methodology including: a replicable comprehensive search protocol (syntax of the search in each database should be included in metadata) to obtain published and unpublished researches, screening process based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, quality assessment process of studies and assessment of risk of bias, unbiased reasons for exclusion of studies, verified quality assessment tools used in the review, data extraction tools, and qualitative and quantitative analysis (meta-analysis) methods.
Short Communications: Short communications are preliminary reports demonstrating new ideas, models, methods, hypotheses and results of complete small investigations which should be restricted to 1000-1500 words in length including two table and two figures (without references). The references number not exceeding 15.
Case reports Should not exceed 1000 words. The case reports should be containing non-structural abstract and tables or figures. The references number not exceeding 15.
Photoclinic: In this type of article, patients and their diagnosis using para-clinical methods are presented. Photoclinics should be up to 1000 words. The maximum number of pictures is four. Number of references should not exceed ten.
Editorials: Editorials provide short commentary and analysis about an article in the issue of the Journal in which they appear. They may include 1 figure or 2 tables. They are nearly always invited, although uninvited editorials may occasionally be considered. Editorials are limited to 800 words, with up to 12 references.
Letter to editor: Letters, up to 500 words, should discuss materials published in the journal in previous six months. Letters are subjected to the editorial review and editing for clarity and space. The authors of the original article will be given a chance to respond in the same issue in which the letter is published.
Preparing Original Articles
The manuscript should include: Title page; the Abstract; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Conclusion; Acknowledgement and References.
The title page: The complete title of the manuscript and running title, the name of all the authors with their highest qualifications, the department or institution to which they are attached, address for correspondence with telephone number, cellphone and E-mail. The authors should be mentioned the ORCID ID.
Main Document: The main document of the manuscript should include "title" not the "title page" at the top. The author is the responsible person for anonymity of article. Therefore, author names should not be provided in the main document.
Abstract page: All original articles must accompany a structured abstract up to 250 words. It should be structured as Background and Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusion followed by 3 to 6 Keywords. Keywords will assist indexers in cross indexing the article as they are published with abstract. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list of index medicus (https://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh). Authors need to be careful that the abstract reflects the content of the article accurately.
Introduction: This should summarize the purpose and the rationale for the study. It should neither review the subject extensively nor should it have data or conclusions of the study.
Materials & Methods: This should include exact method or observation or experiment. If an apparatus is used, its manufacturer’s name and address should be given in parenthesis. If the method is established, give reference but if the method is new, give enough information so that another author is able to perform it. If a drug is used, its generic name, dose and route of administration must be given. For patients, age, sex with mean age±standard deviation must be given. Statistical method must be mentioned and specify any general computer programme used. The Info system used should be clearly mentioned.
Ethical guidelines: In method section must be announced that informed consent was obtained from all human adult participants and from the parents and include the name of the appropriate institutional review board that approved the project. All ethical considerations about subjects (human and animal) and other research components should be based on compliance with the Helsinki Declaration of research ethics. In clinical trial studies, clinical trial registration number [Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT) code] should be provided and also the research ethics committee approval and the code of ethics are required.
Results: It must be presented in the form of text, tables and illustrations. The contents of the tables should not be all repeated in the text. Instead, a reference to the table number may be given. Long articles may need sub-headings within some sections (especially the Results and Discussion parts) to clarify their contents. For details about the tables and figures please refer to the second paragraph.
Discussion: This should emphasize the present findings and the variations or similarities with other work done in the field by other workers. The detailed data should not be repeated in the discussion again. Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and the conclusions that follow from them. It must be mentioned whether the hypothesis mentioned in the article is true, false or no conclusions can be derived. Also, in the end of discussion section the authors mention about limitation of study.
Conclusion: This section should provide the main conclusions and explain the importance and relevance of the study reported. Avoid introducing new findings in this section or reporting general conclusions or facts. This section could also highlight potential directions for future studies.
Acknowledgement: All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be covered in the acknowledgement section. It should include persons who provided technical help, writing assistance and departmental head that only provided general support. Financial support (Grant number) and material support should also be acknowledged.
Conflicts of interest: Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares in, an organization that may profit or lose through publication of your paper. Declaring a competing interest will not lead to automatic rejection of the paper, but we would like to be made aware of it.
References: All manuscripts should be accompanied by relevant references. The author should ensure reference to locally published studies by doing proper literature search. It may not be possible for the editor and reviewers to check the accuracy of all reference citations. To minimize such errors author should verify references against the original documents. The Reference should provide the following information as stated in the Vancouver model as following:

Tables: Tables as well as illustrations should be added in the end of paper. Do not submit tables as photographs. In limited numbers should be submitted with the captions placed above. Place explanatory matters in footnotes, not in the heading.
Figures: The figures should be sent in a format of JPEG which will produce high quality, limited numbers and images as attachment files. The captions should be placed below. The same data should not be presented in tables, figures and text, simultaneously. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from the copyright holder to reproduce figures (or tables) that have previously been published elsewhere.
Abbreviations and Symbols: Use only standard abbreviations. Avoid using them in the title and abstract. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement.
Proof Reading: Electronic proof will be sent in PDF format to the corresponding author to check for typesetting accuracy. Page proofs are considered to be the final version of the manuscript. Corrections should be marked clearly and sent immediately to the journal office.
