Abstract

ABSTRACT

          Background and Objective: Adipose tissue secrets various hormones including adiponectin, which is closely related to weight control and energy, balance. This study investigated the effects of resistance training on adiponectin, testosterone and cortisol levels in untrained men.  

           Methods: Forty untrained men (mean age of 23.8±2.66 years, mean weight of 67.43 ± 4.96 kg) were randomly and equally assigned into groups of upper extremity resistance training, lower extremity resistance training, combined resistance training, and control. The subjects performed eight weeks of weight training, three sessions per week (five sets of 60-85% one repetition maximum). Blood sampling was done prior to the start of the program, after the fourth week, and after the eight week. Alpha level was set to 0.05 for all statically analyses.

         Results: Repeated measures ANOVA showed that eight weeks of upper extremities training significantly decreased body fat percentage (p=0.002, 7.39%), and significantly increased adiponectin (p=0.000; 90.42%) and testosterone (p=0.002; 24.19%) levels. In the lower extremities training group, body fat percentage (p=0.006, 7.39%) decreased significantly, while adiponectin (p=0.012; 87.82%) and testosterone (p=0.000; 23.54%) levels increased significantly compared to the pretest. Eight weeks of combined training significantly increased BMI (p=0.006, 1.88%), muscle mass (p=0.007, 2.24%), and adiponectin (p=0.000, 91.56%) level. However, cortisol level decreased (p=0.017, 19.17%) after four weeks of training.  

         Conclusion: Upper and lower extremities resistance trainings significantly change testosterone levels. Different types of resistance training significantly increases serum adiponectin level and changes body composition, which are effective in prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
             Background and Objectives: Cancer and its conventional treatments may bring about some psychological and health-related symptoms leading to unstable cortisol level. Since evidence has shown that mindfulness based approaches can be helpful to reduce cortisol level, we aimed at investigating the efficacy of   mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on decreasing salivary cortisol level in the women with breast cancer. 
             Methods: in this one- group pretest posttest study, the women with early stage breast cancer were assessed to select eligible ones (N = 15). They were first trained for collecting salivary cortisol sample (before, after and follow-up)   and then were asked to participate in MBCT, an eight-week session approach.  Participants provided salivary samples in the morning (7: 30- 8:30), afternoon (1-3) and night (9-11).  To measure cortisol, Cortisol Enzyme Immunoassay Kit was used. Analysis was performed on the data of 12 participants remained, using repeated measurement.
              Results: the results of repeated measure ANOVA revealed that cortisol level of posttest (after 8-weeks of MBCT and follow-up period) in comparison with pretest was significantly reduced for morning and afternoon cortisol while it was not true for night cortisol.  The post-treatment cortisol was not significantly correlated with age groups, education levels and socio-economic status using repeated measure ANCOVA.   
             Conclusion: Given that the women with breast cancer are at the high risk of psychological distresses and unstable cortisol level, we recommend mindfulness-based approaches esp. MBCT to health providers specifically those working with breast cancer patients.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Given the growing prevalence of obesity in children, the present study aimed to investigate effects of continuous and interval aerobic training on insulin resistance index and serum cortisol levels of obese girls.
Methods: The study was performed on 36 healthy girls aged 9-11 years with a body mass index (BMI) of higher than 85th percentile. The subjects were randomly divided into three groups of interval training, continuous training and control. The training groups performed exercises three days a week for eight weeks. The exercises were performed at 70% of VO2max in the first four weeks and at 80% of VO2max in the following weeks. Fasting blood samples were taken 72 hours before the first session and 72 hours after the last training session in order to measure levels of cortisol, glucose, insulin and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR).Weight, BMI and body fat percentage were also measured by conventional methods. Data analysis was performed in SPSS 21 using paired t-test and one-way analysis of variance.
Results: The mean level of BMI and body fat percentage decreased significantly after the interval and continuous training, respectively (P<0.05). The HOMA-IR index did not change significantly in the study groups (P>0.05). The cortisol level increased slightly in the continuous training and control groups (P=0.075) and decreased insignificantly (P=0.131) in the interval training group. There was no difference between the training groups and the control group in terms of HOMA-IR and cortisol levels.
Conclusion: Insulin levels, HOMA-IR showed a decrease trend while a reasonable increase in cortisol level we showed in the continuous training group. BMI level and fat percentage decreased in two both training groups.
