Background and Objective: Vitamin D is an essential secosteroid, with a variety of pivotal functions that affected the homeostasis of a few body mineral elements especially Calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body. Since Vitamin D deficiency and thyroid diseases are two important global healthcare challenges, we aimed to investigate the relationship between hypothyroidism and both Vitamin D and Calcium levels in an Iranian population.
Methods: This case-control study was conducted in Gorgan, North-East of Iran. A total of 350 individuals, including 175 subjects with hypothyroidism (75 males and 100 females) and 175 euthyroid controls (85 males and 90 females) were recruited. 25(OH) Vitamin D, Serum Calcium, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (freeT3), and thyroxine (total T4) levels were measured in all participants.
Results: Vitamin D and Calcium were significantly lower in patients with hypothyroidism (p <0.0001). Free T3 and Calcium levels were different in hypothyroid patients based on categorized Vitamin D status (p <0.0001). Values of Vitamin D was within sufficient range in all groups. also there was a positive correlation between free T3 with Vitamin D (r =0.337, p <0.0001) and Calcium (r = 0.361, p <0.0001)
Conclusions: According to the results, a probable relationship between decline of Vitamin D levels with thyroid function tests is delineated. However, the causal relationship of these finding should be investigated in further studies.
