Abstract

Stress responses have been excited by the painful stimuli, after induction of anesthesia and during the operation. In order to reduce these responses, it will be useful to select the type of anesthesia. Based on this fact, two groups of patients (Every group had 50 patients) were selected randomly. All patients are older than 18 years old and were chosen according to America Society of Anesthesiologist, class I, II, and were candidated for cataract surgery. Propofol were used for induction and maintenance of anesthesia In group 1 (TIVA group). In group 2 (Balance anesthesia), Sodium Thiopental induced anesthesia and the combination of N2O and Halothane were used for maintenance of anesthesia, respectively. Blood Glucose in two groups was measured before induction of anesthesia that all were in normal range (80-120 mg/d). Then after induction, incision and 30 minutes after start of surgery, blood Glucose was measured again and deviation from basal level were classified in three categories as: <10%, 10-20%, >20%. The results demonstrated meaningful difference between two groups, statistically (Chi-square, P<0.001). Increasing the blood Glucose in group 2, in three stages, was more than group 1. Blood Glucose level was increased about 20% from its basal level, in the majority of group 2 (32% after induction, 64% after incision, 62% 30 minutes after start of surgery). But, this amount of increasing in group 1 was detected as follow. 16% after induction, 16% after incision, 12% 30 minutes after start of surgery. It is possible that in TIVA group’s, control of blood Glucose and stress responses better than balance anesthesia group’s. The comparative measurements of catecholamine level in both groups would be the next investigations.

Abstract

Background and Objective: The interleukin-18 (IL-18) gene on chromosome 11 has been suggested as a susceptibility factor for allergies. It is a member of the IL-1 family that was originally described as interferon (IFN-γ)–inducing factor. IL-18 might initiate Th2 responses with production of IgE via the stimulation of IL-4 and IL-13 synthesis in mast cells and in basophil and eosinophil recruitment, such as allergic inflammation. This study was done to assess the association of Interleukin-18 gene polymorphism -137G/C with allergic rhinitis. Methods: This case-control study was performed on 293 allergic rhinitis patients and 218 healthy control volunteers .The IL-18 polymorphism was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. Results: The frequency of the GG, GC and CC genotypes were 64.2%, 32.1% and 3.7% in healthy controls and 60.1%, 35.5% and 4.4% in allergic rhinitis patients, respectively. This diference was not significant. Conclusion: This study suggests that IL-18 polymorphism gene -137G/C may not be participated as a risk factor in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Curcumin is a combination of active polyphenol from the Curcuma Langa plant, which has extensive biological activities including effects anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and cytotoxic markers for multiple cancer cells. Berberine is an alkaloied isokinolin that is present in berberine and suppresses the growth of many tumor cells. This study was designed to determine the antibacterial effect of berberine and indium curcumin and indium diastile curcumin complexes against E-coli and Bacillus pumilus and comparison of their cytotoxicity on the cell lines of the bladder and stomach cancer cells.
Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity effect of berberine and indium curcumin and indium diastile curcumin complexes was investigated by MTT and dilution test method respectively. E-coli [BL21 (DE 3)], Bacillus pumilus (PTCC 1529), cell lines of bladder (5637) and stomach (AGS) were evaluated.
Results: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of berberin for E-coli was determined 5 mM. At 100 micromolar concentration of berberine approximately 100% of the bladder cancer cells have disappeared. Cytotoxic effect of curcumin complexes on two bladder and stomach cancer cell lines showed that both complexes have different inhibitory effects on cell line life. Cytotoxicity of 20μM indium curcumin and indium diastile curcumin complexes for bladder cancer cells were 58% and 55%, respectively, and for stomach cancer cells were 61% and 34 %, respectively. Antibacterial activity of complexes against Bacillus pumilus and E-coli showed that none of the complexes has antimicrobial effect against Bacillus Pamilus, but both complexes inhibited the growth of E-coli bacteria. The bacteria population in the presence of indium curcumin and indium diastile curcumin complexes was reduced to 40% and 24%, respectively.
Conclusion: This study indicated that indium complexes of curcumin and diacetyl curcumin have a potential for anticancer and antibacterial therapy. Furthermore, berberine as an alkaloid has anticancer and antibacterial activity.
