Abstract

Background & Objective: Atopic diseases are one of the most common chronic conditions in children. A population based matched study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of atopic diseases and this study used to identify its correlations in primary school children aged 6-12 years in Shiraz (Southern Iran). Materials & Methods: This case-control study was carried out in 2228 primary school children. The children were selected using 2-stage random sampling from the 4 educational distrincts of for each child. The consultant physician examined the children with positive result. After diagnosis of eczema, utricaria and allergic rhinitis control groups were selected by using matching method (Age, sex, school). The correlations of atopic diseases were determined by conditional logestic regression. Results: The most important results were as follow: Prevalence of diagnosed allergic rhinitis, utricaria and eczema in primary school children estimated in order 5.2% (Boys: 5.2% & girls: 5.12%), 3.6% (Boys: 3.57% & girls: 3.7%) and 1.6% (Boys: 1.53% & girls: 1.7%). There was no significant association between atopic diseases and birth order, social class, parent’s education, parent’s smoking and period of breast-feeding. An increased risk of childhood atopic diseases were associated with familiar history of allergic rhinitis (P<0.05), familiar history of utricaria (P<0.05) and familiar history of eczema (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our study confirmed that familiar atopic diseases were significant predictors of childhood allergic rhinitis, utricaria and eczema among school children in Shiraz.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Tetra Carbon Cholride has been known as reference hepatotoxin because it can cause necrosis, fatty change, cirrhosis and cancer liver. Silymarin has hepatoprotective and anti hepatoxin effect. This study was done to determine the protective effect of Silymarin in acute hepatotoxicity of CCl4 in rats.

Materials & Methods: In this experimental study, we chose 25ml/kg dose of CCl4 (in mineral oil solvent) as an optimum dose. The hepatotoxic effects of intraperiotoneal injection of CCl4 for obtaining parameters of toxicity and therapeutic effects have been examined. According to enzymatic results (increase in ALT and AST) and histopathologic changes (grading the changes in liver including cytoplasmic granularity, cloudy swelling, necrosis and fatty change), the interval between prescribing silymarin and sampling  was determined. Silymarin as a suspension in propylene glycol CMC 2% (3/2 ratio) has been prescribed in 50, 200 and 800mg/kg doses and serum and liver samples were obtained. Negative control group received silymarin vehicle in CCl4 solvent, drug control received 800 mg/kg of silymarin in CCl4 solvent and positive control received silymarin vehicle after injecting CCl4.

Results: The results showed that prescribing 50mg/kg silymarin one hour after injecting CCl4, in addition to inhibiting transaminase activity, prevents progress of liver injury up to 50% of positive control group. Cellular repair and regeneration are also enhanced, So the grade 3necrosis in positive control group is decreased to grade 0.5 in silymarin gourp in 48 hours prescribing silymarin (50mg/kg).

Conclusion: This study showed that up to six hours after injecting CCl4 significantly prevents hepatotoxicity, and cause acceleration in repair of liver injuries.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Onosma dichroanthum Boiss. is one of the most important mountainous medicinal plants in Iran. This study was done to determine the biomechanical evaluation of root extract ointment of Onosma dichroanthum Boiss. on wound healing in rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 18 male adult Wistar rats were randomly allocated into control (I), vehicle (II) and treated group with ointment containing of extract 1% of root of Onosma dichroanthum Boiss., (III). 20 mm vertical skin incision wound were made on rats back side. The assessment of the wound healing was carried out at day 14. At the end of study, rats were sacrificed, skin sample were extracted and evaluated by biomechanical method (maximum force, elastic stiffness, energy absorption). Results: There was no significant difference in biomechanical parameters among the treated, vehicle and control groups. Conclusion: Topical application of Onosma dichroanthum Boiss. root have no effect on healing of skin wound in animal model.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Physical exercise and nutrition supplements are recommended interventions to reduce cachexia. This study was conducted to determine the effect of resistance training and resveratrol supplementation on muscle regeneration indices of MyoD (myoblast determination protein) and eMHC (embryonic Myosin Heavy Chain) in CT-26 colon cancer mice.
Methods: This experimental study was performed on 20 six-week-old BALB/c mice to which CT-26 tumor was implanted. The mice were divided into four groups of resistance training, resveratrol, combination of resveratrol with resistance training, and control. The resistance training group performed six weeks of progressive resistance training. The resveratrol group received 100 mg/kg resveratrol per day, and the control and resistance training group received the solution of Methyl cellulose through gavage. In gastrocnemius muscle MyoD protein and eMHC level were measured using western blot and ELISA methods, respectively.
Results: eMHC protein in combination of resveratrol with exercise group (4.66±0.25) increased significantly compared to the exercise group (3.46±0.64) (P<0.05). Body weight of mice without tumor (21.50±1.30) in the resistance training group increased significantly compared to other groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the tumor weight of mice and MyoD protein in expermental groups.
Conclusion: Regarding the increasing effect of combination of resveratrol with exercise group compared to resistance training group on eMHC, resveratrol supplementation at higher doses may be recommended along with resistance training to improve muscle regeneration.

Abstract

Background and Objective: The co-infection of tuberculosis (TB) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) presents a significant global health challenge. Golestan Province is considered one of the most important hubs for TB. This study was conducted to simultaneously evaluate the clinical epidemiology of TB and COVID-19 in patients admitted to the Fifth Azar Educational-Therapeutic Center in Gorgan, Iran.
Methods: This retrospective, descriptive-analytical study was performed on 22 patients (12 men and 10 women) with active or old TB and COVID-19 admitted to the Fifth Azar Educational-Therapeutic Center in Gorgan, Iran, during 2020-2022. Clinical data and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results were extracted from patients’ records in the hospital. These data, encompassing nasopharyngeal swab specimens from the upper respiratory tract, as well as tracheal aspirate specimens, were compiled into a checklist format.
Results: Of the 22 patients, 13 were deceased and 9 recovered. Patient hospitalization wards included the intensive care unit (ICU) (36%), respiratory isolation (36%), surgery (4.5%), and infectious diseases (23%). All patients ICU-admitted (100%) were in the deceased group (P<0.05). The clinical symptom of dyspnea was present in all 13 deceased patients (P<0.05). Laboratory results showed that alanine transaminase (ALT) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) values were significantly higher in the deceased group than in the recovered group (P<0.05). Hematological indices, including white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), were significantly higher in the recovered group compared to the deceased group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The probability of death is higher in patients with TB and COVID-19 co-infection who experience dyspnea, require ICU admission, and have increased ALT and BUN laboratory values.
