Abstract

Background & Objective: Surgical treatment is one of the most widely used therapies. One of the most important tasks of the medical and nursing team is to reduce the anxiety of patients and subsequently to reduce the vital signs alterations. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Jasmine essential oil inhalation on physiological parameters of patients before laparotomy.
Method: This study was a randomized controlled clinical trial that was performed on 84 patients undergoing laparotomy in two groups of intervention and control. The intervention group inhaled two drops of Jasmine essential oil and the control group inhaled two drops of aquapura (sterile water) for one hour which was poured on their collar. Physiological variables including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate of the patients were measured and recorded before and after intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16.
Results: The mean age of the intervention group was 35.52 ± 12.73 and it was 36.26 ± 13.39 in the control group. In the pre-intervention stage there were no significant differences in physiological parameters between two groups but after the Jasmine essential oil inhalation, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate variables were significantly different compared to pre-intervention stage (P<0/0001) and this difference was also significant comparing the intervention and control groups (P<0/0001).
Conclusion: The physiologic parameters were markedly improved in intervention group after Jasmine essential oil inhalation compared to the control group, which prevented sudden and severe changes in patients waiting for surgery. Therefore, Jasmine essential oil inhalation may be an effective factor in reducing the anxiety and avoiding extreme changes in physiological parameters in patients which could be recommended in clinical situations.

Abstract

Background and Objective: The young adults, especially the students of medical fields, as the health ambassadors of every community, play a vital role in health maintenance and improvement of society. Promoting the lifestyle behaviors of this group leads to the better health status of other society members. This study was set to asses the Lealth-promoting Lifestyle (HPL) of medical students in Mashhad, Iran.
Material and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 120 medical students of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2018-2019. The data were collected by the self-reported Persian version of HPL profile II which has been validated in former studies. SPSS package (version 20) was used to analyse data, and two independent samples t-test to compare data.sampling was done in two stages, including random selection of the classroom and the clinical ward, and then random selection of students in each.
Results: 50.2% of all participants were male in gender and 77.5% were single. The overall score of HPL profile II among all the participants was moderate. According to the scores of Health-promoting Lifestyle Behaviors (HPLB), stress management scored the highest (29.62±4.45), spiritual growth and physical activity were at the lowest levels (10.84±2.07 and 16.55±4.97, respectively). Two dimensions of HPLB showed a significant difference base on the gender of the participants (better physical activity in men (p-value= 0.04) and self-responsibility for health in women (p-value=0.05)). There was not a statistical difference between HPL subscales by the participants` marital status.
Conclusion: The HPL profile II total score is moderate, but not desirable; therefore, admitting appropriate programs for lifestyle improvement, especially in the field of mental development, physical activities and nutrition, regarding student gender is recommended. Our findings can attribute the health policymakers to develop the health programs among the students and adding related courses to the educational curriculum.

Abstract

Background: Marital satisfaction (MS) is a multidimensional concept related to the individual characteristics of couples, the dynamics of inter-spousal relationships, and intergenerational attachments. We aimed to determine the predictive model of marital satisfaction in breastfeeding primiparous women based on demographic information.
Method: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted between August and November 2015 on 160 primiparous breastfeeding women with full-term, healthy, singleton infant who had been referred to the health centers of Babol, north of Iran, for the two-month vaccination. The research samples were selected using the convenience sampling method among ten centers in Babol, selected randomly through a lottery. They completed the demographic information form and the Persian version of the 47-items Enrich's marital satisfaction scale (EMS) in a self-report manner. The obtained scores were converted into scale scores (0-100). Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 16) with descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequency) and inferential statistics (Student's t-test, ANOVA and Stepwise Multiple regression tests) at a confidence level of 0.05. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapirovilk tests were used as appropriate.
Results: The means± SD marital satisfaction score of breastfeeding primiparous women was 86.05±12.91 (High Level). The three variables of spouse's education (X1), Spouse participation in housework (X2), and age of marriage (X3) were able to predict the level of marital satisfaction (using the formula Y = 33.89 + 2.02 X1 + 4.17 X2 + 0.40 X3). There was no relationship between marital satisfaction with age, spouse's age, employment status, spouse's employment status, education, type of delivery, type of marriage, income, and housing status.
Conclusion: The increase in spouse's education, spouse's participation in the home, and marriage age were associated with higher marital satisfaction. Based on the three mentioned variables, the prediction model obtained can be used to estimate the marital satisfaction of breastfeeding primiparous women.
